Getting there

Burden Falls sits about 8.3 miles south of Carrier Mills in Pope County. Google lists the address as Eddyville No. 6 Precinct, IL 62987.

Open directions in Google Maps or Apple Maps, or view the map on the Burden Falls listing. Navigation apps sometimes route onto seasonal forest roads, so check road status if you are heading into the mountains.

The southern Illinois falls lie within the Shawnee National Forest, where some trailheads are at the end of gravel roads and parts of the forest are designated wilderness with minimal trail markings and no facilities. The northern sites are in county forest preserves and public river corridors, which tend to have marked trails and parking. Hazards include slippery sandstone ledges and unfenced bluff edges above the Shawnee falls, steep informal paths to the bases, and flash rises in narrow canyons during storms. In the north, the Illinois River near Marseilles has powerful currents and a nearby lock and dam, so stay well back from the water. Check locally for seasonal road conditions in the Shawnee after heavy rains, when low-water crossings can flood.

What to bring

This checklist is tailored to Burden Falls based on what visitors report and the conditions typical of Illinois. For the complete list, see our waterfall hike packing guide.

  • Offline map and coordinates. Save 37.56366, -88.64200 and download offline maps; cell service is often weak near waterfalls.
  • Shoes with real grip. Rock near falling water stays wet and slick even in dry weather.
  • Water and a snack. More than you think you need, even for a short walk.
  • A light rain layer. Spray from the falls and quick-moving showers can soak you.
  • Camera and a small tripod. Visitors have shared 255 photos of it; a tripod lets you shoot silky water in low light.
  • Headlamp. In case your visit runs later than planned; check sunset time in the conditions panel above.

How to prepare

Timing

Illinois waterfalls depend almost entirely on recent rainfall. The best window is late winter through spring, roughly March to early June, when storms are frequent and soils are already saturated, so runoff reaches the creeks quickly. Burden Falls and Cedar Falls in the Shawnee Hills are at their best within a day or two after a soaking rain and can be barely trickling during dry stretches in late summer and early fall. Northern Illinois falls follow the same pattern, with spring thaw adding to early-season flow. Summer brings heat, humidity, ticks and mosquitoes to the southern hollows. Fall color in the Shawnee usually peaks in late October, but flow is often low then unless autumn rains are generous. Prolonged cold snaps occasionally create icy formations on the bluffs. 111 Google reviews suggest steady but manageable traffic outside peak weekends.

Safety

Stay behind railings and off wet rock, never climb on the falls, and keep children within arm's reach near the water. Check the weather panel above for flood or storm alerts before you set out; water levels can rise fast after upstream rain. Our waterfall safety guide covers the most common hazards.

Respect the place

Pack out everything you bring, stay on established paths to limit erosion, and leave rocks and plants where they are. See Leave No Trace at waterfalls.

History of the area

Burden Falls was entered in the Geographic Names Information System on January 15, 1980, and it appears on the USGS Stonefort 7.5-minute topographic map.

Its neighbors on the map tell the story of the surrounding land: Ogden Branch (stream, 1.1 mi), Burden Creek (stream, 1.4 mi), and Teal Pond (reservoir, 1.5 mi).

Shawnee Hills. The Shawnee National Forest covers much of this ridged, wooded corner of Illinois, where sandstone bluffs rise above narrow hollows. Burden Falls in Pope County, the most reviewed waterfall in the state, drops over a series of sandstone ledges in a wilderness area of the forest, and it can be remarkably full after heavy rain and nearly dry during a drought. Cedar Falls in Johnson County, near Vienna, is a similar wet-weather plunge from a sandstone rim into a shaded canyon. Both reflect the region's character: short, rain-fed drops framed by moss, ferns and rock shelters.
