Getting there

Hooker Falls sits about 6.6 miles east of Brevard in Transylvania County. Navigate to the coordinates 35.20206, -82.62373, which mark the waterfall itself; the trailhead or parking area may be some distance away. Visitors reach it on foot by trail. Check the current trail map for distance and elevation before you go.

Open directions in Google Maps or Apple Maps, or view the map on the Hooker Falls listing. Navigation apps sometimes route onto seasonal forest roads, so check road status if you are heading into the mountains.

Most mountain falls are on public land: Pisgah and Nantahala national forests, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, state parks such as Gorges and Hanging Rock, and DuPont State Recreational Forest. A few are on private or nonprofit land with their own hours. Parking at roadside falls along US 64 in the Cullasaja Gorge and at popular trailheads fills early on weekends. Hurricane Helene in 2024 caused severe flooding and landslides across western North Carolina, so check the current status of roads, trails and recreation areas before visiting. The most serious hazard is climbing on or near the top of falls: wet granite and moss are extremely slippery, and falls from waterfall edges have caused many deaths in the region. Streams also rise quickly after heavy rain.

What to bring

This checklist is tailored to Hooker Falls based on what visitors report and the conditions typical of North Carolina. For the complete list, see our waterfall hike packing guide.

  • Offline map and coordinates. Save 35.20206, -82.62373 and download offline maps; cell service is often weak near waterfalls.
  • Shoes with real grip. Rock near falling water stays wet and slick even in dry weather.
  • Water and a snack. More than you think you need, even for a short walk.
  • A light rain layer. Spray from the falls and quick-moving showers can soak you.
  • Headlamp. In case your visit runs later than planned; check sunset time in the conditions panel above.

How to prepare

Timing

North Carolina's mountain falls run year-round in most years, but they are fullest from late winter through spring, roughly February through May, when rain is frequent and trees have not yet leafed out to draw down soil moisture. April and May add wildflowers and fresh green to the gorges. Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms that raise streams quickly, and popular swimming spots such as Sliding Rock draw large crowds. Fall color climbs down from the highest elevations in early October to the lower escarpment by late October, making it the busiest season of the year, even though flows are often lower after dry spells. Winter brings quieter trails and occasional ice at higher elevations, when sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway may close for snow and ice. 313 Google reviews make it a well-known stop. Weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit.

Safety

Stay behind railings and off wet rock, never climb on the falls, and keep children within arm's reach near the water. Check the weather panel above for flood or storm alerts before you set out; water levels can rise fast after upstream rain. Our waterfall safety guide covers the most common hazards.

Respect the place

Pack out everything you bring, stay on established paths to limit erosion, and leave rocks and plants where they are. See Leave No Trace at waterfalls.

Rainbow Falls is a hiking destination on the Horsepasture River, and Sliding Rock in Pisgah National Forest is a natural water slide over smooth rock. To the east, Pearsons Falls near Saluda drops through a protected wooded glen, and the Hickory Nut Gorge around Lake Lure adds steep cliffside falls. Rivers here plunge off the escarpment edge in quick succession, producing tall drops and long cascades over bare granite.
